
Beth English, PhD
OAH Executive Director
Beth English is Executive Director of the Organization of American Historians. Prior to starting at OAH, she was director of the Project on Gender in the Global Community at the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs. While at Princeton she also taught in the Princeton Writing Program and was a volunteer instructor with the Prison Teaching Initiative. She has also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and at the College of William and Mary where she was a Glucksman Fellow.
Dr. English’s research and teaching focus on the historical and contemporary labor movement, working-class issues, globalization, deindustrialization, and women in the workplace. She is the author of A Common Thread: Labor, Politics, and Capital Mobility in the Textile Industry, co-editor of Global Women’s Work: Perspectives on Gender and Work in the Global Economy, and author of numerous articles, chapters, and working papers. Her research has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the International Labour Organization.
Dr. English has served as a Commissioner for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and on the American Council of Learned Societies Executive Committee of the Committee of Executive Officers. She has contributed to the Washington Post, NPR, Vox, Huffington Post,and other media outlets.
